Can You Cook A Frozen Roast: Step-by-step Guide

Cooking a frozen roast in the oven is relatively easy and quick. You won’t have to wait for your frozen chuck roast to defrost. Just pop it in the oven. However, you still need to follow the steps below for the best results.

1. Placing the frozen roast in the oven

The first step is also the most straightforward in our cooking process.

First, preheat the oven to about 250 – 350°F. Take the frozen roast beef out of the freezer and place it in the oven. Use a cooking container or a baking dish to store the meat.

2. Garnishing the frozen roast

The second step is entirely up to your preference. You can add spices or add a few herbs to create an aroma. Some of my favorite spices are rosemary, garlic powder, or potatoes.

3. Adding stock

In this step, you need to prepare a can of beef stock (or chicken stock, depending on your preference). Pour this stock into the meat and seasoning tray.

Then you continue to add 1-2 cups of water. If you want the dish’s taste to be even more delicious, use aluminum foil to cover the top.

4. Cooking the frozen meats

The final step is to adjust the temperature and time. Usually, I’ll keep the temperature pretty low, around 250°F. You can increase the temperature to save time, but the longer the meat cooks, the more thoroughly it will cook.

Since this is frozen meat, not thaw meat, you need to cook it for a long time. To be safe and kill all bacteria, cook within four hours.

The result you get will be a perfectly cooked tender roast. Its taste is very delicious and ensures safety for your health.

Should You Cook Frozen Roast With A Slow Cooker?

Frozen meat contains bacteria

Cooking roast beef from frozen meat by slow cooker sounds like an attractive proposition, but it’s pretty risky. It’s rapid and easy to prepare, almost in no time at all.

The main problem is that this way of cooking will bring foodborne illnesses to the table, and I don’t think you want that at all.

The U.S. The Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recommended maximum slow cooker temperatures. It can only be achieved between 170 and 280°F. You can read more in the article.

At first glance, this temperature seems to be perfectly suitable for cooking ground beef in the frozen solid state. But the real problem lies in the process of reaching that temperature.

It takes too long for the slow cooker to heat up from 0°F to the standard safe temperature to kill bacteria (140°F). Usually up to 2 hours to prevent bacteria from multiplying.

Therefore, we do not recommend using a slow cooker for cooking the frozen roast. You can use an instant pot or pressure cooker instead and cook it in the oven. If you’re looking to cook frozen pot roast in oven, check out this pot roast recipe below.

Crock pot frozen roast recipe

Here are the steps to make a pot roast using an instant pot. You can use different chuck roasts like beef, pork, or lamb roasts. The steps include:

  • Preheat the oven to 275°F.
  • Marinate the chuck roast with your favorite seasoning.
  • Meanwhile, heat the oil in your instant pot or crock pot. Cut an onion in half and place it in a pan to fry until golden brown on both sides. Remove onion soup mix to a plate.
  • Continue to add the carrots to the pot and stir until the carrots turn slightly brown. Place the brownish carrots on a plate with the onions.
  • You can add more oil if you find it lacking. Wait for the oil to heat up and put the frozen roast in. Sauté the meat until it turns golden brown. Remove the beef to a plate.
  • Pour the beef stock into the pot and then add the meat. The amount of stock should be just enough to cover half of the meat.
  • Add onions, carrots, and herbs.
  • Cover and cook for 3-4 hours.

3. What is the advice for a cooked perfectly frozen roast?

A few helpful tips for successfully cooking a frozen chuck roast include:

  • Use cookware with stainless steel, aluminum, or cast iron materials. They are excellent heat conductors and distributors.
  • Use a pan that is just the right size for your roast meat. A large skillet leaves a lot of free space, which evaporates the water from the beef very quickly.
  • Small pots make for less efficient air circulation, which leads to undercooked meat.
  • Shallow pans will yield the best results.
  • Let the cooked meat sit for at least three minutes after taking it out from the oven. It will help the meat become more delicious and lower the temperature.

You didn't tell us when to put veggies in after how much time cooking without fluid - so I noticed my roast after 99 minutes making the veggies too dark - so I took them out and am cooking them separate with a tent of aluminum over them.
